Current Responsibility

Alison is Product Manager for the Milliman UK Health Analytics practice. She joined Milliman in 2015.


Alison is a qualified Clinical Coder with over 20 years of experience of working with healthcare data across both the English NHS and Independent Healthcare Sectors. She is experienced in the transformation of standard and non-standard data sets to provide enhanced analytics covering clinical, performance, contracting and outcomes reporting. Alison's experience includes:

  • Management of the Clinical Coding Department within an English NHS Foundation Trust
  • National lead for Clinical Coding within a private hospital chain covering both NHS and Private Medical Insurance (PMI) activity
  • Clinical Coding audit in both the NHS and Private Health Insurance sectors
  • Clinical terminologies from Primary Care to support analysis and linkage of Primary Care to Secondary Care data
  • Use of international Clinical Coding classifications
  • Knowledge of international healthcare payment models, tariffs and currencies
  • In depth knowledge of Payment by Results and Healthcare Resource Groups that underpin the English NHS

Alison has extensive experience with Agile software development methodologies both in developing new products and refactoring existing healthcare data products for new territories. These products include risk stratification and invoice validation tools, solutions to measure compliance against evidence based medicine, population health management tools and the use of artificial intelligence to ensure the accuracy of Clinical Coding.

Alison also has deep domain knowledge of a variety of grouping tools, which provide insight into spend via resource groupers and clinical groupers such as:

  • Episode groupers
  • Pharmacy groupings
  • Health risk factor groupers
  • Long-Term Condition groupers

Alison combines her knowledge of Clinical Coding, commissioning datasets, grouping tools, contracting rules and clinical pathways to:

  • Identify cost savings opportunities for healthcare commissioners
  • Highlight where standardised patient pathways can create perverse incentives
  • Examine the efficacy of an intervention in relation to the condition being treated
  • Identify changes in Clinical Coding practice which impact payments
  • Identify activity which could be undertaken in a more appropriate clinical setting
