Research group publications

Staffed by professionals averaging more than 20 years of benefits experience, the Milliman Employee Benefits Research Group is an integral part of the value we offer our clients. Based in Washington, DC, the group gives technical assistance on employee benefits and executive compensation issues, and represents our clients during filings, appeals, and audits.

The Research Group prepares many of the informational materials we distribute, and maintains an information Web site, as well as our Benefits Information and Knowledge Exchange (BIKE) database—a comprehensive resource containing news, source documents, and benefits-related data. Milliman also has an extensive employee benefits library, housing a broad array of current and historical documents.

To keep abreast of current developments, the group is active in employee benefits practitioners groups, trade associations, and educational organizations. In addition, research staff members are involved in a wide variety of monitoring activities, including:

  • tracking legislative and regulatory developments that affect pension, healthcare, insurance, and other employee benefits
  • preparing comments on proposals from the Department of Labor, IRS, Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, and other federal regulatory agencies
  • helping to secure formal rulings and opinions from federal regulatory agencies
  • reviewing judicial decisions
  • monitoring the activities of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and other organizations and regulatory bodies that issue professional standards and have oversight responsibility
