Advocates, foundations, and research institutions, among others, turn to Milliman for help when financial insight and targeted forecasting can make the difference between success and failure. Whether it’s providing the data to help decision makers apportion coverage or determining whether a program is accomplishing its goals, Milliman has the resources and the creativity to assist these institutions to achieve their goals.
Years of research informed hypothetical scenarios
One foundation came to Milliman to provide cost estimates for a computer game it had developed to elicit a consensus on what constituted basic health insurance. We provided value estimates that made the game applicable to real-world healthcare decision-making. Without our calculations, which were based on our research into healthcare costs and made possible by our extensive experience with benefits in a variety of delivery systems, the process would have held little practical value.
Client example: program evaluation informed funding decision
Another organization turned to Milliman to evaluate a treatment fund established to fill a funding gap. The state’s legislature provided funding for mammograms for low-income patients but not to treat women who had breast cancer. The foundation created a fund to make treatment available for these women and asked our consultants to evaluate its financial, operational, and clinical aspects.
Milliman provided unique value in this project. We put together a team of top-flight physicians, nurses, and actuaries to review the treatment choices, the costs of care provided, and logistical aspects of the program. We made treatment recommendations and conducted research targeted to the client’s needs.
Our experts were able to provide the foundation with the assurance that the program was meeting its goals, and also gave it specific recommendations to expand the coverage. The state legislature ultimately decided to fund the program.
