Covering smoking cessation as a health benefit: a case for employers

Abstract

Smoking is an extremely addictive behavior and quitting is extremely difficult. Although 70% of smokers say they want to quit, only 5% quit in a given year. An employer can choose to help increase the proportion who quit successfully by funding smoking cessation programs known to be effective.

This report provides information so employers can make informed choices based on the costs and benefits of smoking cessation programs—and compare those to other routinely provided benefits.

The study for this white paper was commissioned by the American Legacy Foundation.
