Milliman recently consulted with a large health plan that was trying to find opportunities to contain costs while maintaining its high standards for care. We discussed the organization's strengths and priorities with top management and guided them through a strategy development process, which included presenting revised strategies to the board. Milliman aided executives in determining objectives for several processes, which included creating targets for the number of preauthorizations processed per day and reducing the turnaround time on cases. We then provided training to the staff to help it meet these new objectives. Furthermore, we reviewed the insurer’s relationships with vendors and found an opportunity for significant savings in establishing new relationships with radiology and specialty pharmacy vendors.
