Federal tax case: litigation support

In one recent case, a large insurance company challenged the basis on which its federal tax bill was calculated. Milliman was called upon for its ability to provide both expert-witness testimony and behind-the-scenes advice on actuarial points of applicable tax law.

After an initial loss, Milliman continued to work with counsel after the company decided to appeal the case. The appeals court returned the case to the lower court for reconsideration. As the second trial neared, the IRS offered a favorable settlement which the company accepted, avoiding the cost of additional litigation.
