Healthcare reform legislation has been passed, but reform that meaningfully affects cost drivers will not happen overnight. The establishment of accountable care organizations (ACOs) may be a step in this direction. ACOs aim to make healthcare providers more accountable for treatment outcomes by moving away from traditional fee-for-service payments, thus prompting innovative changes in the U.S. healthcare system.
