Employee perspectives

Kate Fitch, principal, RN and healthcare management consultant
Practice Area: Healthcare
Office: New York
Hired: 1998

My background is non-actuarial. Before coming to Milliman I taught nursing, worked in health and pharmaceutical research, and in case management. I had never consulted before, but Milliman gave me the opportunity to use my knowledge base and skills in a consulting role. My mentor utilized my clinical expertise and input as our group began taking on more non-traditional actuarial projects. There's a philosophy here of bringing people along and exposing them to new challenges without pigeonholing anyone in some preexisting category. I wasn't pushed into situations I wasn't ready to handle, nor was I held back; moving at my own pace I followed my own path to becoming a Principal. That's what's unique about Milliman: the caliber of the people, the professionalism, and the opportunity to pursue your own interests.

I was offered several jobs after college. I chose Milliman mainly because of the people and the opportunity. The people obviously liked what they did. Milliman offered me all I wanted--the ability to advance at a rapid pace within a nationally recognized firm. I started accompanying other consultants to client meetings within my first six months, and after about a year, I was attending client meetings on my own. I've managed clients and client projects for a while now, and I love it. If you're interested in becoming a consultant, this is the place to be. You have flexibility and freedom, achievements are based on your contributions to building a practice.

As a premier leader in the healthcare industry, Milliman does a lot of leading-edge work, which means I get to work with a lot of bright, creative, successful people on a variety of really exciting projects. In many areas, we're blazing new trails that will affect the entire way our nation delivers healthcare. We are known for bringing more content, knowledge and focus on healthcare than any other company in the nation.

Joy Schwartzman, principal and consulting actuary

I originally joined Milliman because I recognized it as a place where I could combine my technical skills with my business and interpersonal skills. Of all the consulting firms I looked at, Milliman offered the most opportunity for growth and development. After many years with the firm, I can honestly say I work for a great company. My work is challenging and interesting, and I am well compensated. What's even more important is that I'm able to balance my work commitments with the time I wish to spend with my family.

Gurwinder Singh, actuarial student
Practice Area: Life and Financial
Office: Philadelphia
Hired: 2003

I came to Milliman after graduating because the firm offered so many challenges and opportunities. I've had the chance to work on a wide variety of projects and learn important skills along the way. As I've tackled the exam process, I've found the company quite accommodating, giving me time off to study when I needed it. If I were to go through the interview process again, would I return to Milliman? Without a doubt. When I look at all the opportunities available I can understand why so many smart people have chosen to finish their careers here.

At Milliman, you have access to an incredible wealth of knowledge and expertise. The folks here represent a broad range of experience and skills. What's so great is that Milliman's very culture is based on knowledge sharing and cooperation. No matter how unusual the client's request, I know there's someone somewhere in this firm who can help me meet their needs. We're also encouraged to form solid, personal relationships with our clients, which results in an extraordinary bond of trust and confidence in our abilities. I know they know we'll do the job right--and that feels great!

Simon Wong, actuary

Milliman is extraordinarily successful at attracting professionals of the highest caliber. I take pride in the knowledge that, in the actuarial field, our actuarial consultants are often referred to as "the actuary's actuary." The opportunity to work on international projects is another attraction. I'm just beginning to explore this part of Milliman, but the fact that it's available is exciting!
