Current responsibility
Van is responsible for maintaining, promoting, and executing the MG-ALFA® software vision both internally and externally. He provides vision, leadership, and domain expertise as the head of the MG-ALFA product team. MG-ALFA is an actuarial projection and pricing tool used within the Milliman Life practices, as well as by insurers worldwide. Van is a principal in the Seattle office and has been affiliated with Milliman for more than ten years.
Experience
Van has more than 12 years of insurance technology and systems experience with enterprise administration and financial modeling systems. His career has been focused on creating products and helping clients leverage technology for business value. He has served in client management, business development, consulting, and software engineering roles as well as product management. Prior to channeling his energy into financial modeling systems, Van spent five years developing and implementing enterprise new business and administration systems as part of Milliman’s STEP Solutions®.
Van began his actuarial career at Minnesota Mutual Life, where he was involved with ALM modeling, pricing of variable and second-to-die products, dividend scale determinations, and reinsurance management. Prior to becoming an actuary, Van was a high school math teacher.

Van has been a frequent speaker, author, and analyst for various industry publications and events on risk modeling, insurance technology, and related topics. He has been a guest presenter at Insurance and Technology CIO Roundtable events on topics including risk management and product development and is a frequent guest presenter for Microsoft events. In 2007, Van was one of four actuaries featured in the Society of Actuaries “Actuaries in Action” series. In 2010, he was recognized in the Society of Actuaries “Image of an Actuary” profile. He has presented at SOA, LOMA/LIMRA, ACLI, and ACORD events, and has authored articles for SOA, LIMRA, Insurance Networking News, and Insurance and Technology publications.
