Milliman statement on racial equity and justice
In recent months, protests following the horrifying killings of George Floyd and others have brought the structural racism and violence experienced by Black Americans painfully into focus. Milliman joins the call for racial equity and justice in America and all countries where we operate.
There is much to be done, but as an immediate first step, we have pledged more than $500,000 to a fund that will benefit two organizations focused on racial justice: Facing History and Ourselves, and The Equal Justice Initiative. We have also committed to fund research and consulting efforts studying racial and social disparities in the industries we serve: insurance, healthcare, and retirement.
We are active supporters of the International Association of Black Actuaries. In addition, we are the top corporate sponsor of the Math Motivators tutoring program, we provide Opportunity Scholarships each year to students in underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and we support the Organization of Latino Actuaries and Ada Developers Academy. While we are proud of these efforts, we acknowledge that they have had a limited impact on diversity within our organization.
We therefore commit to do more to attract, retain, and advance diverse talent, including Black talent. Consistent with our vision to be influential market leaders, we also aspire to be influential leaders on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in our communities and in the industries in which we operate. Accordingly, we will engage an external consultant to review our organization and take clear actions in multiple areas, including recruitment, career advancement, mentoring, sponsorship, and community outreach.
We realize that in order to effect change we need to continually do more, not only by fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment within Milliman, but also through our expertise and work.
