Proton pump inhibitors: A high-cost employee benefit with over-the-counter alternatives

Health plan sponsors are under great pressure to keep costs under control. One way to do this is to carefully manage which prescription drugs to include on a formulary. This paper provides an analysis of shifting proton pump inhibitors, a costly prescription drug category for employers, to greater over-the-counter usage.
