A newly updated Milliman study found highly favorable experience with hedging variable annuity guarantees, with hedging programs maintaining 94% effectiveness from November 2008 to March 2009, compared with 93% in the prior period. Many life insurers have expanded their hedging programs to cover previously unprotected assets in order to boost the security of their capital base.
