Key findings
- Direct written medical professional liability (MPL) premium rose 2.4% to over $5.3 billion—a record high.
- Carriers released about $140 million in prior-year reserves, lower than in 2023.
- Operating ratio improved by about two points, driven by a three-point gain in investment income.
- Policyholders’ surplus increased by about $750 million, similar to 2023.
- Policyholder dividends remained about $140 million, similar to 2023, about half the average paid between 2007 and 2018.
