Parametric insurance: A captivating solution
Parametric policies, which pay based on the magnitude of an event, can bridge coverage gaps that are difficult to insure with a traditional indemnity policy.
This podcast with R. Dale Hall of the Society of Actuaries features an interview of Milliman’s Cody Webb, who discusses the recent paper, “Health and Hurricanes: Studying Disparate Health Impact of Extreme Climate Events, 2017-2020.”
In this Society of Actuaries Research Institute report, Milliman consultants study the effects of hurricanes on human health. We look at the relationship between hurricanes, and the observed prevalence of healthcare utilization or certain health conditions among the affected population. We consider whether this relationship can be observed through a healthcare utilization dataset, and whether there is an interaction between this observation and metrics of socioeconomic vulnerability.

Carbon dioxide poisoning found consistently among populations affected by four hurricanes points to how climate events can have other health effects.
